What's in a Name?

It’s been a year since my last post (I’m sure no one noticed…LOL!), but a lot has happened in the past year. I survived a traumatic brain injury and have almost fully recovered. If I forget your name, I can blame the accident, but it’s probably just that I stink at remembering names. I saw a woman last weekend that I haven’t seen in years. I know I recognized her, but I wasn’t sure from where. I tried to play it off and pretend that I knew her, but I walked away baffled. Her face was familiar, but I couldn’t come up with her name without a lot of thinking (it finally came to me).

Names people have are interesting to me. People I meet either have a name I’ve heard before, which means they go in the group of people I know by that name. Or they have a unique name that I can’t spell, much less remember. The history of proper names is regional and cultural. America has so many common first names that have been used over and over, so I get why people want a unique name. They want to be the first and only “Xyzora”, but remember that having to spell it your entire life might get old, and most people won’t remember your name.

Naming your business is completely different. I know it’s naming your “baby”, but it needs to be unique. First you need to do plenty of research to make sure another company hasn’t trademarked the name you want. Owning a specific name in a specific industry is vital to your business. I had a client who once named their company in the fitness industry the same name that another company owned the rights to in the fitness support band arena. My client received a cease and desist letter from the company who owned the word, AFTER we branded them. It’s not my responsibility to do research for my clients names, but I learned to ask my clients this question BEFORE I design their logo.

So, what’s in a name? Can it be a made up word? Yes, but you’ll have to spell it forever, but eventually people will remember it. Using an existing word is easier to remember, but it’s challenging to own. It’s incredible how many companies have already used words you like. My writer I work with is incredible at coming up with names. She’s so talented and creative, but it’s even hard for her to find one that’s not used.

Once you have a wonderful name, putting a “face on your baby” is the next step. AI seems like a great answer to a lot of companies, but my current question is “Who owns the rights to that design?” If you have a logo designed that you put on everything and Open AI suddenly decides that they own it, there might be a problem. I would steer clear of using AI to do your logo. Plus, it’s not going to give you high resolution, or vector files that makes a logo useful.

Mighty Mouse Productions is one of the few companies that gives you all of your files! As a graphic designer, I figure you paid for it, so, it’s yours. I don’t hold your logos hostage so you’re forced to come back to me, which is what a lot of companies have done for years. You’ll get all of the versions of your logo you’ll need and the original Adobe Illustrator files. It’s a win/win. Work with a real person who creates real files!
